Weather Update: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecasted heavy rainfall across southern Pakistan beginning August 25. A low-pressure system currently over West Bengal is expected to move westward and impact the southern coasts of Pakistan.

Regions Affected:

  • Sindh: Karachi, Hyderabad, Dadu, Thatta, Badin, Sujawal, Shaheed Benazirabad, Jamshoro, and other districts.
  • Balochistan: Khuzdar, Kalat, Lasbela, Awaran, Nasirabad, and others.
  • Punjab and Islamabad: Rawalpindi, Lahore, Faisalabad, Multan, and various districts.
  • Northern Areas: Neelum Valley, Muzaffarabad, Gilgit, Skardu, and surrounding regions.
  • Khyber Pakhtunkhwa: Chitral, Swat, Peshawar, and other districts.

Expected Impact:

  • Flooding: Low-lying areas in Sindh, Balochistan, and southern Punjab may face flooding and flash floods, particularly in urban centers.
  • Hill Torrents: Expected in D.G Khan, Dadu, Kalat, Khuzdar, and other regions.
  • Coastal Flooding: Along the Sindh-Makran coast from August 26 to 29.
  • Landslides: Possible in hilly regions including Murree, Swat, and Kashmir.

Warnings and Advisories:

  • The PMD advises farmers and tourists to plan activities considering the forecast.
  • The Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued alerts for potential flooding and has instructed local administrations to prepare for possible flash floods.

Criticism of Response: Hameeda Noor, an activist from Nasirabad, criticized the lack of effective action by the PDMA, accusing them of failing to protect lives and property. She highlighted ongoing damage and the need for improved preventive measures, particularly in flood-prone areas.
