Power Shock: Government Increases Electricity Rates Across Pakistan

In a major decision affecting households nationwide, the federal government has announced a significant increase in electricity tariffs, impacting millions of consumers, according to Express News.

Households consuming up to 200 units per month will receive a temporary exemption from the increase for three months. However, for all other residential users, electricity costs will see notable rises.

The new tariff structure, as per the Power Division’s notification, sets the base rate for electricity as high as Rs48.84 per unit.

Specifically:

  • Households using 201 to 300 units per month will now pay Rs34.26 per unit, a Rs7.12 increase.
  • Those consuming 301 to 400 units will pay Rs39.15 per unit, up by Rs7.02.
  • For 401 to 500 units, the new rate is Rs41.36 per unit, an increase of Rs6.12.

This tariff adjustment is part of the government’s effort to address financial challenges and stabilize the national power sector, which has been under financial strain.
