US Orders Aircraft Carrier Strike Group to Accelerate Deployment to Middle East Amid Rising Tensions

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has instructed an aircraft carrier strike group to expedite its arrival in the Middle East, reflecting growing concerns over escalating regional tensions. This move is seen as a demonstration of support for Israel following recent threats from Iran and Hezbollah.

The Pentagon confirmed that Austin’s order affects the USS Abraham Lincoln carrier strike group, which is equipped with F-35 fighters. Additionally, the USS Georgia, a guided missile submarine, has been directed to the region. Pentagon spokesman Major General Pat Ryder noted that Austin had discussions with Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, focusing on reducing civilian casualties, progressing towards a ceasefire, and securing the release of hostages held in Gaza. The talks also addressed efforts to counter aggression from Iran-aligned groups.

The United States had previously announced the deployment of the carrier strike group, along with additional ballistic missile defense-capable cruisers, destroyers, and a fighter squadron.

The ongoing Gaza conflict, which began with Hamas’s attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, has resulted in significant casualties. According to AFP, the attack led to 1,198 deaths, primarily civilians, and the seizure of 251 people, with 111 still held captive, including 39 reported dead by the military.

In response, Israel’s military operations in Gaza have caused at least 39,790 deaths, as reported by the Palestinian Health Ministry, though this figure includes both civilian and militant casualties.
